SUNFLOWER AND SAGE ON SUNDAYS
If Music Be the Something, Something, Then Play On
Music is generational, great music isn’t.
There is never a parent that, every once in a while shake his or her head wondering what their children was listening to, and what in heaven’s name qualify it to be labelled music.
I do not know anything about music except I know what I like and I like what I like. I have never learned to play a musical instrument and I doubt I would have been any good at it;
Oh yes, I tried guitar once and could not get the F made; seems my fingers were too short or something. I still have my guitar in the case, and ever now and again I look at it, it looks at me, and I busy myself with something else. We have to know what we are good at.
I like the music from my generation, Caribbean and international music from the 80’s and 90’s is what I grew up on. I understood the language, the emotions, because we were all feeling it at the same time. It was relatable.
Well, about two months ago, I was ‘introduced’ to a rap artist by someone who is no longer on this side of reality. A conversation sparked my curiosity and I went searching for the artist on The Tube and after listening to a few words of the first of his songs that popped up; I felt a connection.
There was a rawness, an energy that was powerful and enrapturing
I listened to his songs for an entire morning with my favourite ones on repeat. Half of the time, I do not know the meaning of the terms used, many of which are localized to his community and a reflection of his upbringing, but there is something about the energy of his voice and the music.
We have an International Music Festival every June where I live. It recently completed its 24th Edition and many, many stars have come here to perform.
I intend to start a petition to get this rapper to perform here. That would be so exciting, see me chanting in the crowd with a bunch of young folks to Set It Off.
