Climate Emergency, A New Champion is Born
Poetry promoting sustainable living
Why get that new thing
When what you have at home, is perfectly working?
Upgrade you say, upgrade to where?
To add waste to the landfill and pollution to the air?
You cite FOMO and YOLO as the reasons why
You should buy that thing, or you damn near might die.
Regardless of the strain put on the natural resource
To satisfy your need, you see no recourse.
So you continue consuming with clear disregard
You have the means now, life’s not longer hard.
Searching and gathering like preparing for winter
Happiness seeking, your growing quite bitter.
For the joy that you sought was not to be found
In the gold that you gathered, from raping the ground.
Alas, now quite tired you are ready to be
A champion for climate, now an emergency.

I salute all of those inspirational humans who continue to champion the cause of sustainable living; encouraging us to be more responsible consumers of the planet’s natural resources. They march and protest and write letters and stories and poems seeking to bring attention to a situation that has now escalated to a climate emergency.
I was inspired to write this piece after a meeting with a real champion, his name is Ken Dunn. He is a teacher and an educator and has been fighting the fight for over 20 years and still continues. He is part of organizations Connecting Communities Worldwide and Africa’s Gift.
